Blog #5 -Understanding Genres
In Chapter one of our textbook we take an in depth look at the world of genres and their meaning. I can now thoroughly explain what a genre is and in the upcoming sentences I’ll do just that. Genres allow us to separate crime fiction novels from crime movies. These examples have the same subject but the parts that go into each are completely different. For a movie you have actors, a script, and its watched instead of reading. The crime novel consists of fictional characters, written rather than spoken dialogue, and its read rather than watched. This seems like an obvious concept, which is true, yet it’s still vital to have a clear understanding of genres so you can clearly compose all the varying genres with the proper conventions and structure. Whenever approaching a paper, whatever that genre may be, you need to be aware of said genres conventions to clearly present your ideas. For our upcoming research paper this is meant for a scholarly purpose and thus must be presented using a very strict layout. You must state the bibliography for all your sources and follow a lot of minor stylistic directions. Otherwise you’ll make your paper unclear and not having the correct conventions will be detrimental to your final grade, and no one wants bad grades. Overall to be a successful writer you must have a clear understanding of a variety of genres.
